History Tour Highlights
The Charles Chapman House was built in 1858 and is one of the earliest and best preserved stone structures in the area. Mr. Chapman was a surveyor who laid out the town site of LeHillier, as well as many sites in the surrounding area.
Maud Hart Lovelace is a well-known author who spent her childhood in Mankato and this is reflected in her books. Her stories of Over the Big Hill and Betsy, Tacy, & Tib are known throughout the world.
The Seppman Mill in Minneopa Park The Grist Mill’s construction had to be halted in 1862 because of the Dakota Conflict. You may not be able to see the mill from the road in the Summertime. If you want the bus to drive into the park (the mill is quite a distance from the park entrance on a gravel road) then you will need to add some additional time to the tour time.
See The Elevator that crossed the dam The grain elevator was the skyscraper of small prairie towns. The Rapidan elevator is still in use today. The 65 foot, 40 ton elevator was moved 8 miles across the Rapidan Dam with its one lone bridge deck and up a steep hill before it reached its current location.
The Rapidan Dam was constructed in 1910. It was severely damaged in the high water of 1965, which took out the flood fates and knocked a large hole in the concrete in the area where the stairs are located. At the present the Dam is owned by Blue Earth County.
